Room 8 - Term 1

Room 8 has had a busy term of learning. We started by getting to know each other and our teacher (Miss Fisher) and familiarising ourselves with the Poutama Syndicate culture.

We have been focusing on the pillars of 'Manaakitanga' which describes a broad cultural concept around kindness, respect and humanity. We have been practicing Manaakitangi in everyday life by interacting with people through greetings, friendship, respect, sharing and caring for the environment.

During our Sea Week focus in early March (a nationwide celebration of our marine environment), we learnt about marine life, their habitats and the rules around catching your fair share of seafood (Kia Moana) and the minimum sizes allowed by law, so we act responsibly to conserve and sustain our natural resources.

We all participated in the Poutama Syndicate triathlon on Friday 1st March which was alot of fun and there was a great turnout by the proud parents cheering us on.   The triathlon helped us to be more active, participate in something different, compete against our peers and enjoy ourselves and we had a great time.

In writing we have been learning about similes, a way of comparing two nouns that are unlike, with "like" or "as." For example  "The water is sparkling like the sun" is an example of a simile because water and the sun have little in common, yet they're being compared to one another.  Similes make our language more descriptive and enjoyable.
